Canal Sur is part of Radio y Televisión de Andalucía (RTVA), Andalusia's public broadcaster. It was created through delegated powers given to this region by an Act of Parliament in its status of autonomy.
Canal Sur consists of two television channels, Canal Sur TV and Canal Sur 2, a public radio network, Canal Sur Radio and Canal Fiesta Radio.
On February 28, 1989, Canal Sur 1 TV was launched as the public broadcaster of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia. However, this means that it was funded by the regional government of Andalusia. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has been in power in the region since Spain restored democracy. Since they control the Autonomous Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalusia), many people accuse the regional government of turning the canal into the mouthpiece of their party. _
The Canal Sur news often featured critical views of Mariano Rajoy and his party, the People's Party (PP).
