WAGA began serving as the premier television station for the Atlanta Falcons following the team's formation in 1966, under CBS's contractual television rights to a pre-AFL merger of the National Football League. The station carried most of the CBS regional or national television programs from the Falcons game until its contractual rights for the National Football Conference were entered into in 1993.
