Africanews is the first multilingual pan-African media – produced by and for Africans. Information on and from Africa will have a new voice: Africanews, a continuous news channel based in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo. It is the first pan-African, multilingual and independent news media broadcasting its programs in English and French in 33 sub-Saharan countries. The new broadcaster is a subsidiary of Euronews - a group owned by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris since 2015 - and is committed to "telling Africa through the facts, avoiding comments, prejudices or preconceived ideas". Africanews was launched online in January. Now it is broadcast via satellite and digital, as well as local broadcasters. It will be broadcast free-to-air and offered free of charge to satellite dish owners for the first six months, but will then use an encrypted signal. This choice was motivated by economic needs, but it could limit the impact and visibility of Africanews because most viewers cannot afford television. The editorial staff has 85 people from 15 African countries and more than 40 correspondents.
